If your business involves any sort of work-for-hire, you should check out Writing Frump. She’s specifically talking about writing, but freelancers who design logos or set up webpages will recognize the zany client stories and have a laugh.

Personally, my unfavorite is the bait-and-switch client. When you first see the ad, the $50 for 500 words sounds good, but then the client tells you that project is “undergoing some changes”, and how about $20 for a 400-word article? And a short description of the article too. And actually, could it have a completely different focus? Paying $10 now, and the other $10 in the clickthrough pennies as they come in. This announcement always comes right before deadline day, so do you scrap the workd you’ve already invested, or make $10.14 on $50 of work?

AdSense Pros and Cons

If your side income comes from a website, you’ve probably heard of Google Adsense. Do you have Google ads on your site?

Darren Rowse of ProBlogger talks about all the great reasons to use AdSense (set it and forget it, good for any traffic level, no need to promote your site and seek out advertisers, etc.) and then all the reasons why not to use it (AdSense gets a cut, loss of revenue from other possible advertisers who see AdSense on your site, etc.)

He makes some good points about AdSense versus finding your own advertisers, but personally I like how easy AdSense is. Putting the code on your site is just a few moments of work, and then you have a passive income stream indefinately. For small blogs, it may be an income trickle, and it make take quite a while to reach the $100 minimum payout, but it’s still essentially passive income.

AllGraphicDesign has a list of 120 things freelancers can do for self-promotion. It’s geared from graphic designers, so some of the tips won’t be applicable to everyone. Here’s one that all freelancers should be doing — get your own website and spread that link around!

Your web site can be your best friend when running a business. It is essential (if you ask me). Make sure to utilize SEO tactics … i.e.

Domain Name with Keywords - Try to purchase a domain name that has your number one keyword in it…such as flyergraphicdesign.com … just don’t be spammy about it.
Search Engines Like Text - Flash sites are beautiful but search engines like text more than images. Try to utilize a design that considers both SEO and beauty.
Use Meta Tags - Meta Title, Meta Description, and Meta Keywords. Meta Title is the most important.
Utilize Header Tags - Use header tags in your content to emphasize the important headers within your articles.
Create Great Content - It is important to also make sure that some of your most important keywords are within your articles. However, you must place these keywords naturally within the article. You aren’t trying to be scammy about it, you just need to make sure that the search engines can recognize your article for what it is.
Add Social Bookmarking Buttons - Add social bookmarking buttons such as digg and stumbleupon to your articles. Here is a large list of social bookmarking buttons and widgets.
Add Your Site to Search Engines & Directories - Add your blog to blog directories as well as search engines.

What better way to spread the word about your work than through sites that are specifically designed for users to spread the word about what they like. Make the most of social bookmarking by getting your content on the best, most appropriate, sites on a regular basis through a targeted social bookmarking campaign. If enough people pick up on your content through these tools, you can see viral success just from this alone. This may not be a “secret” but it’s a pretty simple income stream. Text Link Ads is a site where you can sign up your blog or site, and they’ll send you related — you guessed it — text link ads.

I put this up on a blog a few months ago, and I’ve gotten a few bucks every month from them. It’s not going to pay my bills, but it’s cash coming in for essentially a few moments of my time putting up their code. Depending on the popularity of your site, how many ads you choose to sell and how many advertisers choose your site, it can be much, much higher. Unlike Google AdWords, you don’t have to wait until you make $100 to get paid. Also, it’s a passive income stream, you continue updating your site as usual, and they continue paying you.

By now, everyone using a blog to make money knows about Google AdSense, but do you know about Google Analytics?

When should you sell your business?

I’ve wondered about this for a while…When exactly should a business owner sell his business? If it’s profitable, why would you want to sell it? If it’s not, why would someone want to buy it? If it’s not profitable and someone wants to buy it, obviously they think it could be profitable, so why don’t you take some time and figure out how they were going to make it profitable and do it yourself? I guess some people could just be looking for some quick cash and a quick exit, but the only other reason I can think of is that your just tired and just not very passionate about your business, no that there is anything wrong with that. Most entrepreneurs fail many times before they create a truly successful business. Don’t be discouraged.

Here is a great tip on how to accomplish all of the above. It’s called link exchanging. Link exchanging is where two people who both run websites, put each other’s links on their pages. Page 1’s visitors will click on Page 2’s link and visit their page, and vice versa. This will result in more traffic, more back links, more contacts, and maybe even more friends. And if one of you has any Google Pagerank, that will transfer to the other site as well. So go add some links, and expand your web presence.
