The Business of Making Profits

The way to a successful business is to make a profit on whatever you are selling. However especially for those who do business online, they can easily get swindles by shady “wholesalers”. I like many other’s have tried different wholesaler’s or at least I looked into many of them. I did not however like what I saw and dug a little further and spoke to others.

Wholesalers online and off make money by selling in bulk, that is their way of making a profit. It is because of that reason that many individuals cannot purchase wholesale items unless they have 95% of the time at least a few thousand dollars to spend because items are usually sold in large pallets.

The items are usually priced like this, a great pair of designer jeans that can cost $30 or more, you can get for $7.95 each. However you HAVE to purchase at least 300 pairs.

The problem with the shoddy dealers and newcomers who don’t know what they are doing or looking for is that the seller’s can make them think they are getting a deal when they are not. Instead of $7.95 per jeans, they can say $29.95 and the buyers wouldn’t find out until it’s two late.

Another gigantic problem which is mostly online is middlemen posing as wholesalers. They buy the products from the real wholesalers like the $7.95 jeans but they sell them to you for $19.99. It’s their product they bought and they are making their own profits, however they usually fail to mention that they are NOT wholesalers and usually claim that they are. Darwin Fish … and bumper stickers

For several years now, a lucrative ‘extra money’ business I’ve used to help increase my income monthly, has been selling “Darwin” fish (and all of its varieties such as “Fish n’ Chips”, “Cthuthul fish”, “Reefer” fish, “Pagan” fish, etc) and a variety of bumper stickers. You can buy the Fish plaques for $1.50-2.00 wholesale (in bulk) and sell them for $5-10/ each depending on your market. You can buy bumper stickers for 10 cents - 50 cents each, and sell them for $2.00. At the markets, fairs, festivals, flea markets, and even online like sites such as Ebay, Half, and Amazon … you’d be amazed how well they sell … especially when coming across a patron who has been looking for it for ages, the smile alone you get, is worth more than the money …. Moving mattresses for $$$ - What is your profit margin going to be and where does it come from?

Some good reminders in this article about chosing a proven business model that has a known good fundamental metric for most businesses: Profit margin. I mean, who really wants to sell matresses anyways. But, they are apparently quite profitable. And, at the end of the day, without profit, a business had better be helping people and be a Non-Profit, otherwise it may as well close the doors and send everyone home.

Entrepreneurs often look for things like huge market potential, first mover advantage, network effects, etc. But don’t ignore the success potential of business ideas that are simple to run and make a lot of money. It is a great first step on the ladder of entrepreneurship.
