Many people cannot afford to house a great many birds and take care of them. If you live in the city, chances are that you are not even allowed to have a bird or rooster in your yard. But, did you know that there are many terrific places that you can purchase poultry eggs?

You don’t need a rooster to have your hens lay eggs. You can get good egg layers and keep them in cages in a spare room in your home or in a storage shed with light, water and food. Have the hens lay eggs and then you can sell them to friends and relatives to eat.

This is a great little side business to make you some extra money.

Pet Bathing Side Biz

A friend of mine asked me to bathe her dog. She was feeling ill and the dog really stank. She gave me a little bit of money for helping her out. About a week later, another friend asked if I could help bathe a stray kitty she found. Same thing, I got a little bit of money.

I put an ad in the local paper that I would assist with pet bathing. Since then, I get calls for dogs, cats and even a ferret. This is a good side biz because there is no startup cost. Also, you can just let a few people know and work as little or as much as you want to.

Envelope Stuffer Warning

Envelope stuffing seems to be a great side business to make money. However, there is a word of caution. Some companies charge a great deal for the supplies. Other companies, require that you advertise for them. This means that you pay for the information booklet on how to get set up. They mail you their flyers. You advertise for them and send the flyers out to addresses that you collect from the advertising. The end result is you waste a great deal of time and make little to no money.

Bunny Business

I was amazed at what a demand there is for bunnies. Dwarf bunnies seem to do the best. People like to have a small bunny such as the Holland Dwarf or the Netherland Dwarf bunnies to keep as pets.

One neat thing about bunnies is that you can litter box train them. That’s right! Put their little pellets in a small litter box filled with scoop litter. The bunnies will naturally go to the same spot. They are rather picky about their potty area and very easily litter box train.

Instead of raising bunnies to sell, it is easiest to purchase them wholesale. Find a breeder that already has lots of bunnies and use them to get your stock. This will enable you to keep a steady supply and make a nice profit. There is a huge amount of work that goes into breeding and it can get costly. So it’s easiest to simply buy your stock to re-sell.

My Not-So-Secret Side Biz

I’m a freelance writer and editor in addition to having a day job as an editor at a small university press. I’ve been working hard all this year to make enough money freelancing that I will feel comfortable quiting my day job, I hope by the end of the year.

I actually like most of the people I work with, especially my direct boss, who does basically the same job I do.á= I didn’t want it to come out of the blue that I was going to quit my job.

So the last time I had an evaluation with my boss and he asked how things were going, I told him I was doing a lot of freelancing and the some day “not right away” I’d want to start freelancing full-time.

Of course, writing and editing are both jobs with a lot of freelancers, and my boss has seen plenty of people make the transition, so he wasn’t surprised by my announcement.

In a couple of months, I plan to talk to him again about how things are going and the possibility of cutting back hours or doing my same job as a freelancer in the coming year. Keeping the lines of communication open and both letting my boss know what I want and finding out what he needs will make this transition a lot easier for both of us.

If you have a sympathetic boss (who can keep secrets) let them know if and when you are planning to leave your day job to work on your side business full-time. You never know what kind of help your current employer can be in your new venture. They might even become your first client!

What do bankers want?

If you’re an entrepreneur planning to start your own business, you probably have a ton of ideas but very little cash.

One reason start-ups fail is because they don’t have enough capital to keep them going until they become profitable. To increase your chances of getting a loan from a lending institution, you need to be prepared–ideally with all of the following:

• A solid business plan
• A current financial statement (personal income tax forms for the last several years)
• Great credit
• A willingness to work hard at your business (7 days a week, if necessary)
• Experience in the field (”An entrepreneur with business experience and some other funding sources probably will get a more favorable interest rate than a cash-strapped rookie operator.”)
• An understanding of cash cycles, bookkeeping, inventory control, etc.

Also, you should know the answers to key questions like: Why will the business succeed? What do you want to start, or change? How much money is required? Why is the venture a good risk?

Finally, consider a loan package “involving government agencies and private lenders.” They are a great help in securing money from a bank, because banks will be willing to take more of a risk when other agencies are involved (as the other loans are often guaranteed).

Starting A Business What Not To Do

Today I recalled a story I had seen on the news a few months ago. I remembered it because it was a husband and wife that started a business. I don’t see it as much a cautionary tale as a just use common sense tale.

A husband and wife team decided to create a business online. What did they sell you ask? Clothes, magazines, electronics? No. These two geniuses decided to get money from the world of sex. Nothing wrong with that some might say. The problem is the “females” portrayed in cyberspace were all children. That’s right. None of them over the age of 18, if they were even that close at all.

The police took down these scum and seized computers and anything else that might help with the case. When they checked it turns out this monthly subscription underage sex site had more than 40,000 members. Yes there really are that many sickos out there, and these sickos slash morons all paid via credit card, so I doubt it will be long before they are looking out through a jail cell.

Whatever you do in business just try to make sure it’s legal. The above story there was no way those people could think that was ok or even NOT against the law, but some business moves are more subtle and you will have to talk to a lawyer and officials in your city to make sure that you are following the law. Also PAY your taxes. Men and women bigger in power and much richer than you have been taken down because of that one little fact that most seem to “forget” to do.

Just remember, Heidi Fleiss wasn’t taken down because she was running a prostitution ring hidden in an escort business. She was taken down by the feds after they discovered that she had not paid any taxes. Even she now looks back and says that was just plain stupid. Abandoned Dreams and Ideas

Two months ago before I ever discovered the website Paperbackswap, I took a look around my book filled room and thought of creating a website where people can trade books with others for free, which is what Paperbackswap does.

I sat for hours trying to figure out what to do and how I would do it. I could not think up a website design or how I would credit members. The idea was there but I had no where to go but down. I don’t know a thing about web design, I only know a little html.

The point is I came up with this idea that defined me because I love books. However I was quickly in over my head because without the cash to back it up, the idea wouldn’t get off the ground. Moving mattresses for $$$ - What is your profit margin going to be and where does it come from?

Some good reminders in this article about chosing a proven business model that has a known good fundamental metric for most businesses: Profit margin. I mean, who really wants to sell matresses anyways. But, they are apparently quite profitable. And, at the end of the day, without profit, a business had better be helping people and be a Non-Profit, otherwise it may as well close the doors and send everyone home.

Entrepreneurs often look for things like huge market potential, first mover advantage, network effects, etc. But don’t ignore the success potential of business ideas that are simple to run and make a lot of money. It is a great first step on the ladder of entrepreneurship.

Last year in May I got my BA in Physics and Philosophy from Yale; three days later Emmett and I officially started work on Kiko and became entrepreneurs. We’ve been working on Kiko full time for the past ten months, and during that time I’ve learned a few lessons as a young (newb) founder that I thought were useful enough to share. I’m not claiming to know it all about starting your own company, or even most of what there is to know (I still haven’t made a dollar of revenue, sold a company, brought a company to IPO, the list goes on…), but I wish someone had told me these things ten months ago.
