Possible pitfalls for freelance work

Starting a part time job to supplement your income from a regular job is tempting, and in the age of internet freelancing within the realm of capacity and possibility for most individuals. However, there are legal implications, for most companies have a clause in the appointment contract that forbade you from indulging in such practices. Most companies disallow their full time employees to work elsewhere on a part time basis, and freelance work falls under this definition. The only straightforward option for full time employees bound by such a contract is to inform their supervisors about your part time endeavor, and hope they turn a blind eye to it. In case you do not inform the company and you are caught, the company is entitled to terminate you form their service, and you run the risk of loosing your stable and regular income.
The other alternative is to start the freelancing in your unemployed spouse’s name, even if you happen to do the work, since that would keep your identity concealed. But here again, this would legally count as impersonation, and many companies that engage freelancers do not take this lightly.
