There are millions of people making a living off of Ebay at any given moment but how they did it is hard to find out because if you question 10 people chances are each one is selling something different and got the merchandise in variety of different ways.

One way to get merchandise is to call or go to stores and find out if they are overstocked in any items. Once you identify the items, look around Ebay and see how well they are selling and if the market is saturated in that item. Because if 200 people are selling the same thing it might be best to move on to something else.

Some of the things that sell best at the auction are rare or hard to come by items. Some other things are baby clothes and other items. If you are new to Ebay selling you might want to try your hand at selling some of your children’s baby clothes that they have outgrown.

My Not-So-Secret Side Biz

I’m a freelance writer and editor in addition to having a day job as an editor at a small university press. I’ve been working hard all this year to make enough money freelancing that I will feel comfortable quiting my day job, I hope by the end of the year.

I actually like most of the people I work with, especially my direct boss, who does basically the same job I do.á= I didn’t want it to come out of the blue that I was going to quit my job.

So the last time I had an evaluation with my boss and he asked how things were going, I told him I was doing a lot of freelancing and the some day “not right away” I’d want to start freelancing full-time.

Of course, writing and editing are both jobs with a lot of freelancers, and my boss has seen plenty of people make the transition, so he wasn’t surprised by my announcement.

In a couple of months, I plan to talk to him again about how things are going and the possibility of cutting back hours or doing my same job as a freelancer in the coming year. Keeping the lines of communication open and both letting my boss know what I want and finding out what he needs will make this transition a lot easier for both of us.

If you have a sympathetic boss (who can keep secrets) let them know if and when you are planning to leave your day job to work on your side business full-time. You never know what kind of help your current employer can be in your new venture. They might even become your first client!
