Moving mattresses for $$$ - What is your profit margin going to be and where does it come from?

Some good reminders in this article about chosing a proven business model that has a known good fundamental metric for most businesses: Profit margin. I mean, who really wants to sell matresses anyways. But, they are apparently quite profitable. And, at the end of the day, without profit, a business had better be helping people and be a Non-Profit, otherwise it may as well close the doors and send everyone home.

Entrepreneurs often look for things like huge market potential, first mover advantage, network effects, etc. But don’t ignore the success potential of business ideas that are simple to run and make a lot of money. It is a great first step on the ladder of entrepreneurship.

Last year in May I got my BA in Physics and Philosophy from Yale; three days later Emmett and I officially started work on Kiko and became entrepreneurs. We’ve been working on Kiko full time for the past ten months, and during that time I’ve learned a few lessons as a young (newb) founder that I thought were useful enough to share. I’m not claiming to know it all about starting your own company, or even most of what there is to know (I still haven’t made a dollar of revenue, sold a company, brought a company to IPO, the list goes on…), but I wish someone had told me these things ten months ago.

The Legal Side of Business

Before you’ve taken your business idea and decide to run with it, do you know if it’s legal? Doing some simple research online can help you find out if you can later find yourself in court for legal mumbo jumbo you never thought of.

For instance depending on what you sell, you may decide that you have an overseas market. However you need the proper licenses to do so and a judge might decide that your “business” isn’t legal to export.

Another example would be a product that you have created. It’s all done you have ten thousand products made and your ready to start bringing in business. Then you get a cease and desist legal letter telling you that you are violating a copyrighted document or patented design.

Their are many products which have patents but you might never have heard about, because it wasn’t popular but its been made already. Whatever you decide to build, you have to do an intensive search to make sure that your the first and only one to have made it. Also you need to patent protect your own projects to keep others from stealing your ideas and designs. This is a great place to start. US Patent

Find Your Niche

You want to start your own company. That is a big task in itself but you also have to come up with something isn’t already done or isn’t being done by everyone and their grandmother. Try to find what your good at. What services can you offer that doesn’t already have a million companies selling it. Or what can you bring to that idea that would make it different from the other million businesses?

Some examples would be an icecream shop. There are lots of those and places like Baskin Robbins already have a corner etched out for themselves. You would need to come up with some new out of this world flavors, eye-catching sales and business designs that define YOU. Or another idea would be a summer camp. There are lots of those but you could make your niche by having it be a summer music camp or computer camp.

Also try to figure out what role you would like to play in the company. Sure it’s just you when you start out, but any good business has more than one employee. Will you play an administrative role or be more hands on?

Next comes the start-up costs and depending on what type of company you look forward to starting the costs would be different. How much can you put into the company upfront and will you need any kind of financial assistance such as a bank loan? Put all of your ideas together and figure out how much you will need for each business and see which one is more in your league. Taking Your Business Online

Not to long ago ABC rolled out a new show titled “American Inventor” a knock-off of American Idol which was actually an idea from Simon Cowell. As I watch the show I see some ideas get through that I don’t think are great at all and sometime products are turned away when I think that they would sell.

Through out it all I’ve thought the same thing numerous times to the products that were good in my opinion but didn’t make it and that is for them to create a website and sell there products online. Sounds simple but for anyone who has tried they know it’s far from that.

There are many steps to be taken and here are just a few:

• Do you try to make a website yourself or pay a pro?
• How much money will be needed because;
• How many products will you need pre-made
• How much money do you need for advertising?
• Where should you try to get advertising for you website?

Another thing I’ve thought about is someone who does arts & craft such as knitting items, building furniture or even someone who can draw beautifully but doesn’t have an outlet to make money from their efforts.

For someone who does sculptures they could try placing one on Ebay and see what happens. This needs a little bit of thought as you need to figure out if you want people to bid on it or just buy outright and whichever one you choose you still must come up with a price. Also if the sculpture is too heavy you will have people that might have bought the item, take a pass because shipping will be very high on a heavy object.

Many businesses started out small before becoming the big giants they are today. I think for most of us, we just need to figure out where our talents lie and start there.

Should You Start A Company?

If you ask a small group of people most if not all would say that they would prefer to work for themselves. However not everyone has what it takes to do that, even if it’s just working from home.

One of the first things you have to ask yourself is; “Can I push myself when needed and do I have the motivation to see it through?” The other most importantly factor is a great product or service. Just about anything you can think of has already been invented, so what makes what your offering great? What is it about your product that will get people to buy it?

And finally the finances. How much money do you have or will you need to get your idea off the ground.
