Want start-up advice from a Cisco Exec?

April 17, 2006 · Print This Article

Well, then here it is — from Patrick (Pat) Calhoun, chief technology officer of the wireless networks business unit at Cisco Systems.

He recently spoke about his varied business experiences in Syracuse. Here are two of the tips he gave:

  • Trying for venture capital? “Having a detailed business plan and customers already in place who [can] back up statements [are] both critical,” says Calhoun. Product lead is also key: “No venture firm wants to see a product from a young company similar to something Microsoft will have on the market two months down the line.”
  • Once you’re in the position to start hiring people, only hire the best. “I heard somewhere once that A people hire B people and B people hire Cs,” he said. “What that means is, if you don’t hire real top-notch people, things start to go downhill real fast.”
